ISU students contribute to relief donations

Hurricane Andrew may not have physically hit the ISU campus, but several resident assistants held a drive to raise funds for those that were hit hard and left homeless.

Several Watterson Towers resident assistants held a fund drive for victims of Hurricane Andrew Monday and Tuesday.

Biff Myre, a Watterson resident assistant, said the drive was started by another RA because “she saw the effects of the devastation on television.”

A table was set up during lunch and dinner hours at Watterson on Monday, and should have ended Tuesday, Myre said.

The drive was originally planned to last for one day only, but “we just took it day by day,” Myre said.

“We hope to collect $150 by the end of today,” he added.

All money donated will be turned into the McLean County Chapter of the American Red Cross, which will then be sent to hurricane-ravaged areas, Myre said.

Although Red Cross representatives were not aware the drive was occurring, an employee said “we appreciate any money coming in.”

Sondra Hayes, office manager of the McLean County Chapter of the American Red Cross, said “donations have been coming in constantly” since the hurricane ravaged parts of Florida and Louisiana.

Her office will be receiving the ISU donations today, she said.

In addition, the office has installed new phone lines to accommodate a disaster relief drive that will occur today, Hayes said.

All donations received will be transferred to the American Red Cross national headquarters and sent to help hurricane victims in all damaged areas, Hayes said.
